The value of the dollar was different in the 1930s.

With that in mind, here are some prices of things from the '30s and '40s.

    Gas: 10¢
    Bread: 9¢
    Milk: 14¢
    New Car: $700-$850
    New House: $3,920
    Wages: $1,725
    Rent: $30 a month
    Radio: $17
    Hoover Vacuum: $52.50

    Conversion:
    $1.00 (1939)-$15.42 (2010)
    $5.00-$77.12
    $10.00-$154.25

This site is good for converting dollar values between present and 1939.
